Live Vejer

Vejer de la Frontera preserves, within its medieval walled enclosure, the purest style of popular Arab-Andalusian architecture, with houses of dazzling whiteness, labyrinthine streets, narrow and steep, and lime arches, all of great artistic beauty.

Its impressive town centre is situated very close to the sea, on top of a green hill at an altitude of 190 m, from where there is a beautiful panoramic view. Some of the most beautiful views are from Trafalgar Street and Corredera Street.

Tips and prior recommendations.

The best way to get to know Vejer is to wander through its narrow streets, letting your senses take you away. It is definitely worth seeing the Plaza de España, the Patio and Tower of the Mayorazgo, the Jewish Quarter and the Puerta Cerrada, the Castle, the Church of the Divino Salvador and the gates and arches in the wall.

If you want to get to know Vejer through its legends in a different and exciting way, we recommend the guided and sung night routes organized by Marimantas Vejer. They also organize children’s routes and other family routes during the day.

If you have a little more time, (about 20 minutes walk from La Veleta) we recommend a visit to the Hazas de Suerte Park, with its windmills and a large playground, ideal for those with children. The Asociación Cultural al Uso del Burro, known by the locals as Los Burros de Juanino (losburrosdejuanino.com), has its headquarters there. As well as allowing you to visit the inside of one of the flour mills, they also organize donkey rides.

Where to eat

We are good food lovers, and Vejer has a magnificent and varied gastronomic offer. We will be happy to inform you, according to your preferences, during your stay.

Our special recommendation is El Muro Restaurant, run by chef Francisco Doncel.

Surroundings

Santa Lucía (3 km from Vejer) and its natural surroundings with its natural pools and Roman aqueduct.

El Palomar de la Breña (6 km from Vejer). Now inactive, it is one of the largest pigeon lofts in Europe, with more than 7700 nests, in the heart of the Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park. It is now part of a private hotel, but can be visited free of charge by asking permission from the hotel staff.

Beaches

Playa del Palmar, in the municipality of Vejer and just a few kilometers from the town, is one of the largest beaches in the whole region. It is 4,200 meters long and just over 50 meters wide on an almost undeveloped beach that is home to a wide variety of tourists: families, young people, quiet and sporty. It is also one of the best known waves in Andalusia for surfing and one of the most famous sunsets in the whole area.

Zahora is a little more urbanized and therefore, the influx of people tends to be greater. It is also a perfect beach for fishing. Next to it are the beaches of the famous Faro de Trafalgar and Caños de Meca.

Playa de la Hierbabuena is located near the port of Barbate. It is a non-urbanized beach, normally very quiet and with stupendous views of the Tajo Cliff which, with a height of over 100 meters, is the most notorious cliff of the Andalusian Atlantic.

From the beach begins the Torre del Tajo path, which culminates in a beautiful panoramic view near one of the watchtowers that in the 15th and 16th centuries warned of pirate ships and later witnessed the Battle of Trafalgar.
